Harrison Band Announcements

The Harrison Winter Program is this week! It is scheduled for Friday, December 14th- please note that band students will perform at the 1:30 pm program only!  Students were given an outline of the winter program so they can know what to focus their practice on in the weeks leading up to the performance- click here to download a copy of this outline. Winter Program invitations were also sent home with students- click here to download another copy of the invitation. Students will be performing with backing tracks for the Winter Program. They can practice with these backing tracks any time they want- they can be found in the Band Documents box toward the bottom of this page.

In addition to the Winter Program music, 5th grade students are continuing to learn new notes and play more complex songs on page 11 and 12 in the Sound Innovations book. Students should be using their green flashcards at home to help them memorize the notes on the staff  6th Grade students are concentrating on finishing book 1 so they can move on to book 2. All students are encouraged to practice with a metronome- a link to a free online metronome can be found at the left of this page. Not sure what your child should be practicing? You can always look at the boxes at the very bottom of this page to see a step-by-step example of what each practice session should look and sound like.

With all of the above things to practice, 5th grade band students should be practicing at home about 15-20 minutes each day and 6th grade band students should be practicing 20-30 minutes each day. The next practice check will be on Friday, December 21st. This means the instrument needs to go home after band lesson days and come back to school again on the next band lesson day. Harrison provides shelves off the stairs going into the stage/vocal music room for band instrument storage. Band students should place their instruments on these shelves (smaller instruments on the top shelves/larger instruments on the bottom shelves) and NOT in their classrooms. Band students should also make sure to bring their book (Sound Innovations, Book 1), a pencil and their band folder every day.

5th Grade- What to Practice at Home

WEDNESDAY, DECEMBER 12th

WOODWINDS & BRASS

  1. Breathing/Sizzle Exercises (use metronome)- 1 minute.
  2. Assemble Instrument/quality sound on entire instrument (use metronome)- 1-2 minutes.
  3. WARM-UP- Band Warm-up sheet, all  -2-4 minutes
  4. REVIEW- Sound Innovations Book: pg. 10 & 11- all (use metronome)- 5-7 minutes.
  5. SOUND INNOVATIONS- pg. 11 & 12- all (use metronome)  6-9 minutes. Pay attention: go at least 4 counts (8 would be better) before taking a breath! Use your flashcards if you are struggling with reading the new notes!
  6. FOCUS- Winter Concert Music- see Winter Program Outline for exact songs to practice. 
  7. Written Activities: complete the Thanksgiving Week Homework Assignment- due on Wednesday, 11-28. Please turn this in if you have not already done so!
  8. REMEMBER- our Winter Program performance is this week- please practice at home!
  9. Put instrument safely away in case- 1 minute.

FULL PRACTICE TIME TOTAL = 20-25 minutes.

PERCUSSION

  1. Stretching (prepare to play)- 1 minute.
  2. Assemble Instrument- 1 minute.
  3. Basic Bell Practice (see pg. 12 in packet- use metronome)- 3 minutes.
  4. Snare Drum Stroke Practice on pad (see pg. 4-5 of packet- use metronome)- 2 minutes.
  5. Snare Drum Reading Practice on pad (handout- use metronome)- 6 minutes.
  6. WARM-UP - Band Warmup, all on bells only -3 minutes.
  7. REVIEW- Sound Innovations Book; pg. 10 & 11 for both mallets and percussion- all (use metronome)- 5 minutes.
  8. SOUND INNOVATIONS: pg. 11 & 12- all for both bells and percussion (use metronome)  6-9 minutes. Pay attention: What is a flam? What is a flam paradiddle? Did you remember to dampen your sound during the rests on bells? Use your flashcards if you are struggling with new notes.
  9. FOCUS- Winter Concert Music- see Winter Program Outline for exact songs to practice.   -6-9 minutes.

  1. WARM-UP: Quarter 2 Warm-up Sheet, all (use metronome)- 3-5 minutes.
  2. REVIEW: Sound Innovations Book: pg. 28-30- 5 minutes.
  3. SOUND INNOVATIONS: pg. 31-33- 5 minutes.
  4. FOCUS: Winter Program Music- see winter program outline for list of items to practice.
  5. SHEET MUSIC: The Victor's March (Michigan Fight Song), No Place Like Nebraska (Husker Fight Song), Star Spangled Banner (National Anthem) & Winter Trilogy-  5-8 minutes, please pick only 2-3 pieces of sheet music each day to practice.
  6. FUN: Smoke on the Water/Iron Man/Olympic Fanfare/Lets Go Band (see handout)- 2-4 minutes.
  7. Written Activities: no written activities at this time- please focus on the winter program music.
  8. Put instrument safely away in case- 1 minute.
