There is no school on Friday, September 14th due to teacher curriculum day. There is also no school on Monday, September 17th due to a teacher work day. School resumes on Tuesday, September 18th.
5th Grade Band students have been learning quickly as they begin work in their Sound Innovations book! All students should be able to show you our breathing exercises, sizzle exercises, how to play their mouthpiece/headjoint with a good sound and appropriate pitch and how to properly and safely assemble their instrument to play their first 3 notes. Students should be focusing their practice all of page 5 in their Sound Innovations book as well as #6-8 on page 6. Students are encouraged to practice with a metronome- a link to a free online metronome can be found on the leftt of this page.
6th Grade Band students are working on a wide variety of music during the 1st quarter, including a formative playing assessment over #76 on pg. 20 of the Sound Innovations book. Please see the box at the bottom of the page for a complete outline of what 6th grade students should be practicing.
With all of the above things to practice, 5th grade band students should be practicing at home about 15-20 minutes each day and 6th grade band students should be practicing 20-30 minutes each day. This means the instrument needs to go home after band lesson days and come back to school again on the next band lesson day. Harrison provides shelves off the stairs going into the stage/vocal music room for band instrument storage. Band students should place their instruments on these shelves (smaller instruments on the top shelves/larger instruments on the bottom shelves) and NOT in their classrooms. Band students should also make sure to bring their book (Sound Innovations, Book 1), a pencil and their band folder every day.
Not sure what your child should be practicing at home on their instrument? Please ask your child- they would love to show you what they have learned so far in band! You can also look at the box on the very bottom of this page to see an outline of what students should practice at home.
Feel free to contact me at any time with any questions you have about band lessons- my contact information is on the left below these announcements.
